Ownership of guns is a right given to Americans by the second amendment. But, as with all rights, there are always rules and laws attached. As with the right to free speech or freedom, in a just society, rules help the greater good. Abiding by these rules does not infringe on the right to bear arms, but protects innocent victims.

Sharon Girard - AZ House of Representatives LD8 Candidate

Gun Violence

I propose that in Arizona we should:

  1. Ban Assault weapons. These are not needed for hunting. As a surgical PA I have seen the damage gun shot wounds do to patients. The damage done to a person from an assault weapon shreds the internal organs and damages the body, many times beyond repair. With other gunshot injuries there is a chance to save the person or body part. With assault weapons, those chances are gone as the bullets tears apart the body and makes it almost impossible for a surgeon to fix. Why would anyone want to inflict that sort of pain on another unless it was for malicious intent?. Therefore, only criminals would want assault weapons, so they have no place in a civilized society.
  2. Universal background checks. Criminals will always be able to get guns but why not make it as hard as possible. That way, the only person with a legal gun, is a good guy with a clean background check.
  3. Two week waiting period to buy a gun. No one needs a gun emergently. There should be a cooling off period for a letal weapon. It may save a life of someone considering suicide or murder. All others with legitimate reasons should have no problems waiting.
  4. Ban Bump stocks. Again, no reason for fast rounds which is dangerous. Guns for sport and hunting do not need these. There is no other reason to have them.
  5. Raise the age of 21 to buy all guns. You must be 21 to drink alcohol. Alcohol is a dangerous drug which is addictive. An adult should make alcohol decisions. Therefore, a gun is dangerous weapon, and only an adult should be allowed to purchase one.
  6. Require all guns to be secured and locked up when not in use when children may be present. Thousands of children each year die from accidental gun shot wounds. We must put our children first over sport and protection. Our children have a right to be safe and to live, which should trump our rights to own a gun. If you own guns be responsible, lock them up when not in use and children are present. There should be criminal and civil penalties if children use a firearm to hurt others or themselves and the gun was found not to be secured. This is child abuse and negligence and the adult gun owner should be responsible for any damages or death.
  7. We must expand mental health services for those in need. Many rural counties in our state seriously lack providers. We must make mental health services a priority for those in the schools who have problems and those in our community. More access to mental health services will support those with violent tendencies. We must add more guidance counselors, support staff and resource officers in schools. The recommended ratio is 1:250 but in Arizona it is 1:920. This is unacceptable and must be fixed.

We must put our children first. We must put strangers in our society first. We must work to protect everyone from gun violence.
